We are honored to feature the stunning, REGAL statement jewelry and home goods by Alicia Goodwin of Lingua Nigra! We are struck by the hand-wrought opulence of these pieces, and we loved learning more about the inspiration behind them. Read on!
What is your favorite piece in your collection and why?
Oh my, honestly I have so many pieces I love. I make everything for myself, well there are a lot of pieces that folks make special requests for, but those still come from the heart. My current, current favorite that I’ve been wearing almost every day are the Two Clouds Above Nine earrings. They are pretty large and really bold and have this beautiful texture that is subtle compared to the scale of the piece. The gold plating tops off the entire look. Once I posted them on Instagram they became more than just my own favorites and I’m really surprised at how many folks have snatched this particular style (but very appreciative).
What inspired you to become a maker?
My work is inspired by nature. At first glance, it might not look that way, but the techniques I use and how I apply them to metal are controlled and still completely random, much like the forces of nature. I’m also somewhat of a romantic and one of my favorite periods for jewelry is the Victorian era. This was an era where things were not really what they seemed, with braided hair encased was the norm, amongst other mourning jewelry. Another period I just love is practically any pre colonial meso american period. The gold that was used was so strong and bright and so powerful. There were so many talismans and so much jade! I could go on and on.
What is something about your heritage that makes you proud?
Everything about my heritage makes me proud, but there is something to be said about being a woman and then there is something to be said about being a black woman. There is so much that goes back to my heritage and culture, from my work ethic to my quick wit, that I can attribute to being black and I love it so much.
What is the size range of your pieces?
My work ranges from pretty small studs to large shoulder dusting earrings. I also have small, delicate necklaces and larger statement pieces.
